Flydubai Terror: First Officer Cut Engines in Dive

Fascinating and chilling new operational details have emerged surrounding the dramatic mid-air terror attempt aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073 bound for Tel Aviv. Prominent Italian daily Corriere della Sera published a comprehensive reconstruction on Sunday based on survivor testimonies, ADS-B radar tracks, intelligence assessments, and passenger cabin video recording.

“I knew these were the final seconds”: Captain of terror flight speaks from hospital | Photo: Screenshot

According to the reconstruction, two Boeing 737 captains tasked with analyzing interior cabin video identified a critical technical anomaly: cabin emergency lighting illuminated while the airliner was still airborne. The lighting shift typically signals an automated switchover to battery power caused by generator failure—strongly suggesting that both CFM LEAP engines may have been intentionally shut down during the struggle. Aviation authorities emphasize this remains an active technical investigative track rather than a conclusive determination.

The ill-fated itinerary began around 05:00 at Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 3, where 174 passengers—including 27 children—boarded the capacity flight aboard a Boeing 737 MAX. Captain Sumeet Machhar, 38, a highly experienced Boeing aviator, led the crew alongside 29-year-old Omani First Officer Hamam al-Hamami. Flight planning and pre-departure briefings proceeded without incident, and at 07:05 the airliner departed runway 30R.

The flight progressed normally through its initial cruise phase, crossing 32,000 feet by 07:27 and reaching its assigned cruising altitude of 34,000 feet by 08:09 under autopilot command. Coincidentally, two off-duty flydubai pilots returning as deadhead crew were seated in the passenger cabin—a presence that ultimately altered the crisis’s course.

Around 09:15, at cruise altitude, the first officer asked permission to step away from his seat to pray—a routine operational courtesy that drew no suspicion from the captain. Approximately four to five minutes later, standing behind the captain’s seat, al-Hamami unholstered the cockpit crash axe—mandated for onboard emergency fire and extrication response—and struck Machhar viciously in the back of the head. Stunned and believing a structural hull failure had occurred, the captain realized he was under physical attack and engaged in hand-to-hand combat despite deep lacerations and severe blood loss.

Throughout the struggle, the captain fought toward the emergency cockpit door release switch to allow cabin crew entry. The reinforced ballistic cockpit door, designed to prevent illicit breach from the passenger cabin, became an obstacle as al-Hamami fought to block its release latch. Meanwhile, cabin attendants outside repeatedly tried manual entry code sequences.

A chance occurrence altered the outcome: around 09:20, five-year-old Nina Manes asked her mother, Tali, to escort her to the lavatory. The mother heard violent thudding sounds inside the cockpit bulkhead and immediately alerted one of the off-duty captains seated nearby. When the off-duty pilot approached the reinforced door, the internal lock disengaged, exposing the violent struggle within. Additional passengers rushed forward, administering trauma aid to the bleeding captain while grappling to pin down the first officer.

At approximately 09:21, al-Hamami disengaged the autopilot and forcefully pushed the control column forward into an extreme pitch-down attitude. Within just over 30 seconds, the airliner plunged roughly 16,000 feet (4.9 kilometers) at velocities exceeding 970 km/h (524 knots), exceeding structural airframe limits and causing physical stress damage to the vertical stabilizer and rudder assembly.

Consulting 737 captains who reviewed cabin footage noted the passenger emergency ceiling strips illuminating during the dive. This indicates the aircraft lost generator power, supporting the hypothesis that al-Hamami deliberately reached for the center pedestal and toggled both engine start levers from “Run” to “Cut” ff.”

Simultaneously, Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayoun—drawing on rudimentary aerodynamic knowledge from watching the documentary series Mayday (Air Crash Investigation)—leaped onto the control column and pulled back with full force to arrest the vertical descent. Around 09:25, the airframe suffered a secondary altitude loss, consistent with a total lack of engine thrust. Shortly thereafter, the two off-duty captains gained full command of the flight deck, stabilized flight surfaces, initiated emergency in-flight restart procedures for the twin powerplants, and regained control.

At 09:31, one of the recovery pilots set transponder code 7700 indicating a general in-flight emergency. By 09:38, as al-Hamami was bound and immobilized on the cockpit floor, the crew escalated the squawk to 7500—the international aviation code denoting unlawful interference and aircraft hijacking. As they approached Jordanian airspace, Saudi air traffic control instructed the crew to divert immediately to Tabuk Regional Airport for an emergency landing. At 10:57, the Boeing touched down safely. Captain Machhar was evacuated to an intensive care unit with severe traumatic head wounds, while the first officer was transferred into Saudi military custody.

According to Corriere della Sera, Israeli intelligence assessments conclude al-Hamami plotted to eliminate the flight crew and plunge the airliner into a suicide crash inside Israeli territory. Background findings reveal al-Hamami had joined flydubai only eight months prior, having departed Oman Air under scrutiny over radicalized extremist ideology.

Intelligence agencies also identified linked social media accounts containing suspicious surveillance footage of Israeli commercial aircraft filmed in Dubai as early as October 2023.

The ongoing multilateral probe is focusing on several systemic vulnerabilities: pre-employment vetting protocols for flight crew, security risks around crash axes stored inside secure flight decks, ballistic door override logic during internal hijackings, and forensic flight data confirming whether the aircraft engines were manually shut down in flight.

NYC’s Anti-Hate Plan Slammed for Ignoring Israel Connection

A new policy framework unveiled by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to combat rising antisemitism across the five boroughs has sparked sharp backlash from local Jewish organizations and community leaders, who argue the strategy completely whitewashes the central role of anti-Zionism and hostility toward Israel.

A coalition of more than 25 Jewish organizations and communal bodies released a joint rebuke, charging that the mayor’s plan fails to address the primary day-to-day threat facing Jewish New Yorkers: targeted harassment, intimidation, and violence masked as anti-Israel activism. The coalition stressed that Mamdani pointedly avoided adopting a clear definition of antisemitism—specifically the internationally recognized IHRA working definition—thereby evading the ideological root of the surge.

According to NYPD crime data, Jewish residents comprise approximately 10% of New York City’s population yet are targeted in roughly 50% of all confirmed hate crime incidents. This stark statistical reality underscores the massive gap between the scale of the threat and City Hall’s proposed remedies. The plan, titled the “Strategy to Combat Antisemitism,” features hate-crime prevention funding, the establishment of an inter-agency working group, and expanded capital grants for Jewish communal infrastructure. Mamdani pointed to a pledged $26 million allocation—an 800% year-over-year increase—promising that municipal agencies will bolster local security perimeters.

However, throughout the formal presentation, Mamdani made no mention of the State of Israel or the pervasive impact of anti-Zionism. Israel’s Consul General in New York, Ofir Akunis, sharply criticized the mayor’s announcement, noting that it focuses almost entirely on financial security allocations while disregarding anti-Israel hostility and disruptive demonstrations across the city. “Money does not buy values,” Akunis remarked, emphasizing that a genuine struggle against antisemitism requires Israel’s formally adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition and directly confronting incitement on the streets.

The communal friction unfolds against the backdrop of an unprecedented surge in overt antisemitic displays in the city. Recently, neo-Nazi agitators were documented marching through central New York carrying swastikas and chanting antisemitic slogans without municipal or law enforcement intervention—an incident that further deepened the Jewish community’s alarm and highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive moral clarity from city leadership.

‘NAZA – Real Story’ Hits 7.5M Views, Heads to U.S. and EU

The Israeli public diplomacy film “NAZA – The Real Story”, created by Israel Morning editor Hagai Gutman, Lt. Col. (res.) Roi Danino, and Adv. Ariel Averbuch, was designed as a direct counterweight to the anti-Israel film produced by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor. Embarking on an unapologetic media campaign to expose the reality on the ground inside the Gaza Strip, the trio has generated massive viral traction, with the film crossing 7.5 million views to date. In an exclusive interview with Channel 14’s Tal Meir, the creators revealed: “We have been formally invited to screening tours across the United States and Europe in the immediate weeks ahead.”

    Photo: Channel 14 News broadcast

Gutman, who directed and edited the project, recounted the initial spark behind the initiative: “A few weeks ago, we had an emotionally charged evening following the announcement of the festival win for the two creators. It drove me out of my mind. We held an intense debate about why a platform like that is given away unchallenged. I couldn’t understand why no one was mounting an active counter-effort. We needed to present the other side—the true, just, and unapologetic side.” Gutman underscored that the primary objective was to deliver unvarnished facts regarding conditions inside the enclave: “This is what Gaza looks like from within: a wasps’ nest of terrorists. Wherever you turn, you encounter operatives or concealed munitions.” That uncompromising focus drove the production forward: “We were amazed to see how powerful and resonant our truth actually is.” The documentary, released with full Hebrew, English, and Russian localizations, ignited explosive engagement: “Every five minutes, 25,000 new viewers enter to watch,” Gutman noted.

Adv. Ariel Averbuch emphasized that the broader public diplomacy battle is only in its opening phases: “People discuss this issue as if the incident has concluded and we are merely offering a delayed reaction. In reality, the event hasn’t even begun.” Averbuch pointed out that the rival anti-Israel film has yet to be widely distributed to the general public, having circulated primarily within restricted international film festivals and closed screenings. “The main contest is ahead of us. We are already preparing to travel abroad for international screenings. Our film is an offensive production showing that for every death in the Gaza Strip, there is solely one guilty party: Hamas.”

Photo: Screenshot from “NAZA – The Real Story”

Avarbuch emphasized that the “NAZA” affair is still far from over: “We’re talking about NAZA as if the event has ended and we’re bringing some response. The event hasn’t even started yet.” According to him, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor have not yet distributed the film to the general public, and the public storm erupted only after it was screened at festivals and closed events. “The event is still ahead of us. We’re preparing now to fly to screenings abroad. Our film is an offensive film that exposes that for every killing in the Strip there is one guilty party: Hamas,” he clarified.

Gutman added that the production was completed rapidly without institutional funding: “We did not take a single shekel from anyone. We relied purely on goodwill, resolve, and initiative. To our delight, it took off exponentially.” In recent hours, hostile pushback from anti-Israel activists began surfacing online, including accusations claiming, ‘Just as you stole ‘Palestine’, you will steal our film.’ “They are showing us exactly who we are up against,” Gutman observed. “I think that reaction explains everything.”

Fly Dubai Passengers May Be Entitled to Major Compensation

The harrowing mid-air terror attempt aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073 did not conclude with the Boeing 737’s emergency landing in Saudi Arabia and the repatriation of its passengers to Israel. A complex legal front is now opening, as passengers evaluate several distinct compensation tracks—ranging from statutory compensation for flight delays and disruptions to bodily and psychological injury claims against the airline, as well as potential state recognition as victims of hostile acts.

    Photo: Yossi Aloni, Flash90

The primary legal track is expected to proceed directly against flydubai under the Montreal Convention, the international treaty governing commercial airline liability for damages passengers sustain during international carriage. Aviation law experts assess that in the extraordinary context of an airborne attack—where passengers faced imminent mortal peril inside the cabin—clear causes of action exist for bodily and psychological injuries, even for individuals who sustained no direct physical trauma.

Legal experts have pointed to potential claim evaluations reaching approximately $250,000 per passenger. However, practitioners stress that this figure represents an expert assessment of potential claim ceilings rather than an automatic entitlement. Actual liability and final awards will depend on each traveler’s circumstances, the quantifiable evidence of diagnosed harm, and the ability to establish a direct causal link to the mid-air trauma.

The legal groundwork for such claims has deep roots in Israeli jurisprudence. Following the 1976 Air France hijacking to Entebbe, Israeli courts established that an aircraft hijacking constitutes an “accident” under aviation liability law and that psychological injury falls squarely within actionable damages. This landmark precedent is directly applicable to the legal review of the flydubai crisis, though each claim must be adjudicated individually.

    Photo: Yossi Aloni, Flash90

Parallel to mental trauma claims, an independent track addresses the acute commercial disruption. Under Israel’s Aviation Services Law (Tibi Law), passengers subject to prolonged delays and cancellations are entitled to statutory benefits and financial compensation, estimated at approximately 2,450 NIS per passenger for this route. Formal eligibility remains subject to statutory terms and exceptions.

Beyond direct cash compensation, the law mandates duty-of-care obligations during severe disruptions, including meals, refreshments, telecommunication access, and lodging accommodations. For flydubai passengers, conditions were unusually grueling: following the cockpit struggle, the aircraft made an emergency diversion to Tabuk, leaving passengers grounded for hours in a sovereign state lacking diplomatic ties with Israel, where conventional consular and commercial repatriation solutions could not be immediately deployed.

    Photo: Shutterstock

Additionally, passengers are reviewing individual private travel insurance policies, which may cover unforeseen out-of-pocket costs, baggage disruption, and urgent medical or psychological treatments, depending on policy terms.

Concurrently, Israeli authorities are weighing whether to designate the passengers as victims of hostile acts formally. If granted state recognition under Israel’s Victims of Hostile Actions Law, eligible travelers suffering severe psychological aftereffects would qualify for ongoing state assistance, therapy coverage, and disability stipends. This administrative review remains in progress.

For the survivors of Flight FZ1073, the traumatic airborne ordeal now transitions into the courts and insurance claims offices. Beyond the emotional scars, proceedings will center on substantiating individual damages and identifying corresponding liability—whether from the airline, private insurers, the state, or an integrated multi-track remedy. Experts caution that major claims under the Montreal Convention carry a strict two-year statute of limitations, requiring passengers seeking redress to act within the statutory window.

Israel Targets Hamas Leader Who Replaced Sinwar in Gaza Strike

Israeli security forces carried out a targeted overnight airstrike between Friday and Saturday in Gaza City, aimed at eliminating senior terrorist Ali al-Amoudi, the designated successor to Yahya Sinwar and deputy head of Hamas’s political bureau in the Gaza Strip. The strike was executed while al-Amoudi was operating out of an apartment used for terror activities embedded within a multi-story residential building.

In a joint statement, the IDF and the Shin Bet (ISA) emphasized: “This is further evidence of the Hamas terror organization deliberately embedding itself within the civilian population, cynical abuse of non-combatants as human shields, and the exploitation of civilian infrastructure to direct terror operations. The terrorist al-Amoudi served as Yahya Sinwar’s right-hand man and personal aide, and was directly involved in top-level decision-making for the October 7 massacre.”

Al-Amoudi holds a long and lethal history of anti-Israel terrorism. He was directly involved in the murder of four Israelis in Judea and Samaria in 1993, as well as the 1994 operational attack in Ramallah that claimed the life of Shin Bet coordinator Noam-Menachem Cohen R.I.P. He was released from Israeli prison alongside Yahya Sinwar in the 2011 Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange and remained one of Sinwar’s closest operational confidants until the Hamas chief was eliminated in 2024.

Following Sinwar’s death, al-Amoudi rose to become the single most senior Hamas leadership figure remaining on the ground in the Gaza Strip, playing a direct command role in coordinating active terror cells and attempting to rehabilitate Hamas’s military infrastructure for ongoing warfare against Israel. The targeted airstrike was conducted to eliminate an immediate operational threat. Defense officials confirmed that precision munitions and specialized aerial tactics were used to mitigate collateral damage and protect non-combatants as much as possible. The IDF and Shin Bet are conducting technical assessments to confirm the strike’s operational results.

Bizarre UAE Demand Delays Dubai Rescue Flights to Israel

The uncertainty surrounding rescue flights from Dubai continued Thursday, even after authorities approved their operation, with an unusual new Emirati requirement now raising questions over whether the first scheduled flight will be able to depart.

    Arkia plane | Photo: Shutterstock

Arkia was expected to operate the first rescue flight from Dubai to Israel at 7:00 p.m. Thursday. Despite receiving approval for the flights, however, several unresolved issues remain that could affect the planned departure.

The delay centers on a requirement imposed by the United Arab Emirates under which cargo aircraft must operate alongside the Arkia flight. The cargo planes would be required to be positioned at the airport before passenger check-in begins and remain there until after the passenger aircraft has taken off.

    Photo: Avshalom Sashoni, Flash 90

The unusual requirement is currently being discussed by the relevant authorities as officials work to allow Thursday evening’s Arkia flight to depart as planned. Preparations are simultaneously continuing for additional rescue flights expected to depart Dubai for Israel on Friday.

If the remaining security and logistical issues are resolved, Israeli airlines are expected to begin operating the rescue flights according to the approved framework. Arrangements for transporting passengers’ luggage aboard separate cargo aircraft remain a central part of the preparations.

For Israelis currently stranded in Dubai and waiting to return home, the latest development means there is still no final certainty over when the first flight will depart despite the preliminary approval granted for the rescue operation. The airlines are continuing to monitor developments and await final authorization that would allow the first flight to get underway.

NYPD Sting Exposes $2M Hamas Funding Network, Arrests Brothers

Two Louisiana brothers have been charged with allegedly helping finance Hamas through an international fundraising network that solicited donations under the guise of humanitarian assistance for Gaza, in a case uncovered with the help of an undercover New York Police Department operation.

Abdel and Omar Adhami were arrested last month in Louisiana and face federal charges stemming from alleged efforts to raise money online and transfer funds to Saleem Alzaq, a Gaza-based Hamas figure who prosecutors say used social media to spread propaganda and solicit donations.

The wider operation allegedly collected at least $1.7 million from donors around the world, including more than $626,000 from donors in the United States. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said investigators ultimately uncovered a financial network involving more than $2 million being funneled to Hamas. The investigation took a remarkable turn in November 2025 when Alzaq inadvertently established contact on Snapchat with an undercover NYPD detective operating under the name “Hussain.”

Court documents do not establish whether the undercover officer ultimately transferred money to Abdel. According to federal investigators, Abdel used multiple Snapchat accounts between 2021 and 2025 to disseminate Hamas propaganda and solicit donations, while directing followers toward a Telegram account that published material supporting Hamas and ‘Palestinian’ Islamic Jihad alongside fundraising appeals. He also allegedly solicited money through Instagram while presenting the fundraising as assistance for people in Gaza.

Investigators accuse Abdel of sending more than $83,000 connected to the network between 2023 and 2026, including approximately $81,000 through two PayPal accounts and another $2,000 through Western Union. The brothers used code words to conceal their activities, including the term “bread,” referring to Hamas operatives and financing. “This is the message I wanted to convey to the person who donated the bread,” Alzaq wrote to Abdel via Snapchat in January 2024, according to court documents, adding that “some of them received the bread, thank God.” The conspiracy began to unravel when the Hamas operative, Alzaq, mistakenly contacted the undercover NYPD detective.

He later instructed the detective to contact Abdel directly to coordinate methods for transferring funds, noting that the young man transfers money to him on a monthly basis. It’s unclear whether the undercover detective actually transferred any money to Abdel, who assured the officer via WhatsApp that “everything is legal, God willing.” The two brothers now face charges of providing material support to a terrorist organization and wire fraud.

The operative Alzaq was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist organization, conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and conspiracy to defraud the United States.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch addressed the arrests in a statement, saying that “the NYPD’s counterterrorism work knows no borders.” She said, “Our intelligence analysts uncovered this international financial network and built the case that exposed more than $2 million being transferred to the terrorist organization Hamas,” adding that this is the kind of exceptional counterterrorism work the NYPD does every day to disrupt threats before they reach New York.
