  • The Religious “Lite’s” Crisis Since Bennett’s Betrayal

The Religious “Lite’s” Crisis Since Bennett’s Betrayal

For years, the “lites” were considered the “successful child” of the Religious Zionist sector—the ones who integrated into the heart of Israeli society and its economic elite. But since Bennett and Shaked’s abandonment in 2019, a broad segment of Religious Zionism finds itself in a deep leadership crisis. While Smotrich is racking up achievements on the ground, the “rich brother” is still searching for a political home somewhere between Liberman and Eisenkot.

Religious Zionism is typically divided into two main groups: the “lite-bourgeois” on one hand, and the “Torah-nationalist” on the other. For most of the sector, this division isn’t just theoretical—it’s present within families, among friends, and in residential neighborhoods. But in recent years, it seems that specifically the “successful brother,” that bourgeois and established stream, is at the height of a political midlife crisis. This is an identity and leadership vertigo that began with Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked’s desertion in 2019, and has only intensified since.

Over the past decade, a charged and emotion-laden battle has been waged between these two camps. On one side stands the camp identified with Bezalel Smotrich, and on the other, the one formerly identified with Bennett. This is a fight where “no prisoners are taken,” and the hatred and resentment in it burn beneath the surface. While the prevailing perception was that the lites are the “successful child” of the family, at least regarding personal career and integration into Israeli society, the political and ideological results present a completely opposite picture.

For a decade now, Bezalel Smotrich—who “took over” the sectoral brand abandoned by Bennett—has been working systematically and diligently to realize Religious Zionism’s flagship goals. Looking at his activity summary, he presents dramatic achievements: significant membership in the war cabinet facing seven fronts, a historic leap forward in advancing sovereignty in Judea and Samaria, and responsible economic management during a prolonged war period. Alongside this, the sector’s institutions—the preparatory academies, yeshivas, and national service—have become the “beloved sons” of Israeli society as a whole thanks to their enormous sacrifice on the battlefield.

In contrast to the consolidated sectoral success, the bourgeois brother finds himself in confusion. While individuals within this group heroically bear the burden of the national stretcher, as a political group they’ve lost their way. Since the formation of the “Change Government” in 2021, they’ve been left without a real political home. This instability creates restlessness, anger, and outward blame, similar to a classic teenager’s behavior. For a moment they hoped Bennett’s courtship would bring relief, but discovered his intention was to pull them into his new political home rather than return to foundational values.

Reality is slapping those who hoped for a Bennett comeback in the face. After his union with Lapid—one step too far for most of the sector—his political brand has weakened, and heading into the next elections he may become a passing episode. Thus that “wandering soul” of the sector finds itself in another round of searching: Will it be Liberman? Eisenkot? Maybe the combination of Hendel and Tropper? All are perceived as distant relatives, but they aren’t “the real thing” this public thirsts for.

The sobering up, it seems, will come sooner or later. It will grow from within, from the disappointments and the required process of sectoral maturation. It’s still unclear where this journey will lead them: to a warm family reunion within the right? To a deeper understanding of Israeli society’s complexity? Or perhaps to a true partnership with the traditional-Mizrahi camp, still perceived as hard to digest for descendants of the European sector? Meanwhile, all that’s left for us is to embrace them and wait for their return home.

  • Netanyahu Names New Military Secretary

    Netanyahu Names New Military Secretary

The military secretary who will replace Roman Goffman is Brigadier General Guy Marchisano, who is well-known and well-liked in the Prime Minister’s Office. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced this today (Thursday) to Defense Minister Yisrael Katz and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir. Upon assuming office, Marchisano will be promoted to the rank of major general and replace Major General Roman Goffman.

Marchisano served in his last position as the military secretary to the Minister of Defense, a position he held in recent years under Defense Ministers Yoav Galant and Israel Katz. Before that, he served in a long line of senior command and staff positions in the IDF, including Chief of Staff of the Northern Command, Commander of the Pillar of Fire Formation, Commander of the Bayonet Formation, Commander of Battalion 405, and Head of the Planning Department in the Ground Force.

Marchisano, 47, was born in 1978 and raised in Ramat Hasharon. He graduated from Alon High School in the city and enlisted in the IDF in 1997 in the Artillery Corps. He began his military career as a soldier in the 55th Battalion of the 215th Infantry Division, and later attended an officer course and served in a variety of command positions in the Corps.

Throughout his years of service, he held a number of significant field and staff positions. Among other things, he served as a battery commander in the 403rd Battalion, deputy commander of the 402nd Battalion during the Second Lebanon War, an officer of the 425th Battalion, and head of the office of the then Southern Command commander, Yoav Galant. In 2010, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel and appointed commander of the 405th Battalion in the Golan Formation, and later commanded the advanced training of artillery officers at the IDF Artillery Corps.

In 2015, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel and appointed commander of the Bayonet Formation, and later commanded the Pillar of Fire Formation. In 2019, he was appointed head of the planning department in the Land Arm. In 2020, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and appointed chief of staff of the Northern Command.

In addition to his military experience, Marchisano is a graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in international relations and holds an MA in business administration from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He lives in Netanya, is married to Dr. Daniela, a family physician at Clalit Health Services, and has three children.

A senior political source told Channel 14 about the selection of Marchisano: “Guy was military secretary to the defense ministers for 3 years – including throughout the war, and was in the most sensitive consultations, a partner in intimate dialogue with the Americans, and at all the most difficult decision-making junctures, and earned the trust of the prime minister and his office staff.”

First Female Joins Elite IDF Reconnaissance Unit

A female soldier has completed training for the IDF’s elite Chief of Staff Reconnaissance Unit—the first woman to finish the specialized course.

The milestone marks another phase in a pilot program launched in December 2024 to examine expanding women’s service in combat units, including special forces. The soldier passed preliminary screening, met required criteria, and completed a dedicated training track that lasted over a year and a half.

The IDF congratulated the soldier on her significant and groundbreaking achievement.

How she’ll be integrated into the unit’s operational activities will be finalized soon and implemented according to operational needs and in compliance with the Joint Service Order.

Meanwhile, a summary of the training phase will be brought to the General Staff shortly.

  • Tax Benefits Approved for Judea and Samaria Towns

Tax Benefits Approved for Judea and Samaria Towns

Israel’s Knesset passed legislation today (Thursday) granting tax benefits to communities along the “Eastern confrontation line” in Judea and Samaria. The bill, sponsored by Knesset members Tzvi Sukkot, Limor Son Har-Melech, and several others, passed its second and third readings with 32 votes in favor and 23 against.

The new law offers tax credits to communities in the “Eastern confrontation line zone” in Judea and Samaria. Towns located within 2 kilometers from the separation barrier.

For a town to qualify as a “preferred community” and for its residents to receive the tax credit, it must meet four strict conditions as of December 31 before the tax year. First, student transportation to and from the town must be permitted only in armored vehicles, according to Defense Ministry publications.

Additionally, the town must be classified in cluster 6 or lower on the periphery index and cluster 6 or lower on the socioeconomic scale. The final condition requires that the town’s establishment was legally authorized.

Residents who live in a qualifying communties for the entire tax year will be eligible for a tax credit according to the rate and ceiling set in the Income Tax Ordinance. The law allows residents to choose between this credit and another if they qualify for multiple benefits.

The law takes effect retroactively from January 2026 and will remain in force until December 31, 2027. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich will be authorized, with approval from the Finance Committee, to extend the law’s validity by order for additional periods not exceeding two years each.

The bill’s explanatory notes clarified the main rationale behind the initiative. The government’s national priority map, established in August 2013, includes communities in Judea and Samaria that face security threats, but until now the criterion of security threat has not been factored into eligibility for tax benefits. The current law aims to correct the existing situation and enable the tax credit for residents.

  • U.S. Lawmakers Tee Up Support for Judea and Samaria

U.S. Lawmakers Tee Up Support for Judea and Samaria

A Long Island golf course became an unlikely venue for American-Israeli political outreach last week, as roughly 200 business leaders, lawmakers, and pro-Israel activists gathered for what organizers are calling the first golf tournament dedicated to supporting the communities of Judea and Samaria.

Watch our exclusive reporting from this event

The event, organized by AFJS (American Friends of Judea and Samaria), drew several sitting legislators, including Arkansas Senator Jim Dotson and Arkansas State Representative Mindy McAlindon, alongside Florida State Representative Chase Tramont. All three have been involved in state-level legislative efforts to formalize use of the name “Judea and Samaria” in place of “West Bank,” emphasizing that the latter is a politically charged substitute for the region’s historical (pre-1950 and post 1967) and biblical designation.

Arkansas State Representative Mindy McAlindon said during the event, “The mission of the Jewish people in Judea and Samaria began thousands of years ago, and you are continuing it today. Judea and Samaria are important to all of us, Christians and Jews alike. Our goal is to turn Arkansas’s state legislation supporting Judea and Samaria into federal legislation.”

So far, three U.S. states, Arkansas, Arizona, and Tennessee, have adopted laws that ban the use of the Jordanian occupation name of ‘The West Bank’ in official state documents, and in so doing, recognizing Israel’s historic claim to its heartland, with the movement gaining momentum and support in dozens of others.

    Photo: AFJS

The format was a deliberate departure from the standard conference-hall circuit. Signs across the fairways described biblical and historical sites connected to the region. Golfers symbolically dedicated their shots to individual communities. The goal, organizers said, was to reach Americans who come in through the sport and leave with a more substantive understanding of the region.

“Jews, non-Jews, and people who have never been to Israel are all here,” said Yigal Dilmoni, AFJS CEO. “There are people for whom this is the first time they are hearing what it is.” Dilmoni told us that over the last two years, AFJS members have supported Israel’s heartland by donating six new tractors which work on farms in strategic areas in Samaria, Binyamin, Gush Etzion, the Jordan Valley, and Mount Hebron. This is in addition to plows, cows, drones, and holy books that were donated to agricultural farms, helping strengthen the pioneers who protect the lands of the Bible.

The evening dinner closed with tributes to the attending lawmakers and an unexpected birthday celebration for Elisha Medan, a reservist wounded in Gaza, whose appearance drew an emotional response from the crowd.

AFJS organizers say they plan to make the tournament an annual event. For an organization that has largely operated through delegation trips and legislative briefings, the golf format represents a calculated effort to expand its audience in the United States at a moment when support for Israel in American public discourse is increasingly under pressure by left-wing lobbying and foreign agents pushing an anti-Israel and pro-Islamist agenda.

    Photo: AFJS

Yigal Dilmoni, CEO of AFJS, said, “We broke new ground and made history with an experiential event that brought the story of Judea and Samaria to the most influential fairways in America. We succeeded in creating a deep connection and an unforgettable experience between business leaders, opinion makers, and decision makers in the United States and the heart of the biblical homeland. Participants were exposed to the tremendous development taking place on the ground and to the strategic and historical importance of the region. We created a true alliance here and an unprecedented opportunity to further strengthen support in the United States for Israel’s pioneering enterprise. This is a first-of-its-kind event, and with G-d’s help, we will continue it as a tradition.”

  • Arson Suspected as Wildfires Sweep Israel’s Heartland

Arson Suspected as Wildfires Sweep Israel’s Heartland

Two massive fires broke out Wednesday in the Judea and Samaria, mobilizing firefighters and volunteers across multiple locations. The first fire erupted near the Shomronim neighborhood close to Har Bracha, and the second near the Ein Sukot spring in the Jordan Valley.

At Har Bracha, nine teams are working three separate fronts. In the first sector, flames spread toward Mitzpe Yosef and a nearby outpost, where firefighters managed to stop the fire’s advance. In the second sector, near a grain mill, crews established a containment line and evacuated nearby vehicles to prevent them from catching fire.

The third sector is close to residential homes, though no immediate danger currently exists. Meanwhile, six firefighting teams were dispatched to the developing fire near the Ein Sukot spring in the Jordan Valley, where challenging terrain is hampering firefighting operations.

Earlier Wednesday, firefighters from the Binyamin district battled another fire that broke out near the town of Kochav Hashachar, in the grazing lands of the “Ma’ale Ahuvia” farm. Firefighting teams worked alongside farmers from nearby farms and gained full control of the incident.

The investigations branch of Israel Fire and Rescue Services’ Judea and Samaria district determined that in both fires—the one at Har Bracha and the one at Kochav Hashachar—there is real suspicion of deliberate arson. The circumstances of the incidents are under investigation.

Arab Party Invites Anti-Israel ‘Palestinian’ Envoy

The Arab party Hadash will invite Husam Zomlot, the ‘Palestinian’ ‘ambassador’ to London, to a conference focused on the “ongoing Nakba”—one of the ‘Palestinian’ Authority’s senior ‘diplomats’ and a notorious anti-Israel voice worldwide. Zomlot has accused Israel of war crimes in the past and claimed the October 7 massacre was merely Gazans’ attempt to “defend themselves.”

The communist party’s conference will also feature outgoing Hadash chairman Ayman Odeh.

Shortly after October 7, Zomlot worked to accuse Israel of war crimes. At a London demonstration about a week and a half after the October 7 massacre, Zomlot spoke and claimed Gazan Hamas ‘Palestinians’ were only “defending” themselves.

In that same speech, Zomlot falsely accused Israel of bombing the Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza, and even declared that Israel “murdered hundreds of doctors, nurses, and cancer patients.” As is well known, the Ahli Hospital was hit by a failed rocket from the Islamic Jihad terror organization.

Zomlot also previously refused to condemn the deadly terror attack that occurred in the Neve Yaakov neighborhood of Jerusalem in 2023. Additionally, he regularly addressed crowds in London and declared that “Palestinians demand the right of return” and that “the time has come for Israel to leave Palestine and Jerusalem.”

  • The Paramedics Who Saved Israel’s New Mossad Chief

The Paramedics Who Saved Israel’s New Mossad Chief

An emotional full-circle moment unfolded yesterday (Tuesday) at Mossad headquarters when incoming director Roman Gofman met for the first time with Moshe Weitzman and Elishiv Mizrahi—the two United Hatzalah paramedics who treated him under fire and helped save his life on October 7, after he was critically wounded.

On the morning of Simchat Torah, as sirens wailed across southern Israel, Weitzman and Mizrahi rushed south to save lives. At approximately 8:30 a.m., near the Beror Hayil Junction, a civilian vehicle flagged down paramedic Moshe Weitzman. Inside was Major General Roman Gofman, then commander of the Tze’elim base, suffering from severe gunshot wounds sustained while fighting terrorists.

Weitzman immediately loaded Gofman into the ambulance and began an urgent evacuation, maintaining constant communication with him to keep him conscious throughout the journey. Paramedic Elishiv Mizrahi joined the evacuation after meeting the ambulance en route, having just completed the evacuation of wounded civilians to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon in his private vehicle.

Together, the two paramedics fought to save Gofman’s life until he safely reached the hospital.

In a moving gesture of gratitude, the Prime Minister’s Office and Gofman invited Weitzman and Mizrahi to attend the official ceremony at Mossad headquarters marking Gofman’s entry into the role. There, the circle that began on the burning roads of southern Israel on October 7 was finally closed in a meeting that deeply moved those in attendance.

Moshe Weitzman reflected on the experience after the ceremony: “In those moments inside the ambulance, I had no idea I was treating someone who would one day lead one of Israel’s most sensitive and important organizations. We saw a wounded fighter, a heroic commander, and we had one mission before our eyes—to keep him conscious and save his life.”

He added: “Who would have believed that one day he would become Mossad chief? To stand here today at Mossad headquarters and watch him take command of the organization is a full-circle moment that is difficult to put into words.”

Elishiv Mizrahi also recalled that dramatic morning: “After evacuating wounded civilians to Barzilai Hospital in my private vehicle, I heard Moshe’s call over the radio and didn’t hesitate for a moment. I joined him on the road and together we fought for General Gofman’s life, doing everything possible to keep him with us throughout the journey.”

Mizrahi concluded: “To stand today at Mossad headquarters and see that same wounded fighter from the ambulance receive the keys to one of Israel’s most important security organizations is an extraordinarily moving full-circle moment, and a living reminder of the power of mutual responsibility and saving lives in Israel.”

  • Israel Unveils Massive Haifa Bay Development Plan

Israel Unveils Massive Haifa Bay Development Plan

The National Planning Council, headed by Planning Administration Director General Rafi Elmaleh, approved guidelines Tuesday for preparing an environmental impact assessment for “District 1” of the national master plan for Haifa Bay, known as National Master Plan 75 – “Bay Gateway.” The decision marks a major milestone in advancing one of the largest development projects currently planned in Israel.

The first district, which forms the northern section of the plan, spans roughly 3,000 dunams (about 740 acres) and includes over 19,000 housing units, approximately 3,000 hotel rooms, commercial and employment space, and a proposal for extensive beachfront development. Areas included in the district are the tank farms, the stadium complex in Kiryat Haim, Brandeis Forest, and the coastal strip—making this the only district in the plan with direct access to the sea.

National Master Plan 75 aims to drive sweeping change across the Haifa Bay area by creating a new urban zone that combines residential, employment, commercial, logistics, and advanced industry. The plan seeks to strengthen the connection between Haifa and the Krayot suburbs, improve public access to the beach, and create economic growth engines for the entire northern region.

Over the past two years, the editorial committee completed comprehensive planning work to shape the planning framework for the area and identify land needed for major infrastructure. Following approval of the environmental assessment guidelines, detailed implementation planning will begin, during which specific plans will be advanced and various environmental and infrastructure aspects will be examined.

Planning Administration Director General Rafi Elmaleh called it “a significant step in realizing the vision of National Master Plan 75 and transforming the face of Haifa Bay for generations.” According to him, the project is expected to connect Haifa and the Krayot, open the urban space to the sea, and create a foundation for economic, environmental, and social growth for the northern region.

The Israel Land Authority emphasized that the first district is only the beginning of a sweeping initiative that will transform Haifa Bay from an industrial and infrastructure zone into a developed, high-quality, and sustainable urban space. Approval of the plan marks the start of one of the most ambitious projects seen in Israel in recent decades.

Mossad’s New Chief Takes Over With Iran as Top Target

After Israel’s Supreme Court rejected petitions against Major General Roman Gofman’s appointment as Mossad chief and ruled that his conduct in the Elmakayes affair “does not cast ethical doubt on him, certainly not such as to disqualify him from serving as Mossad director,” the appointment officially took effect.

The handover ceremony for the director of the Mossad for Intelligence and Special Operations was held today (Tuesday) at the agency’s headquarters, attended by the Prime Minister and top security officials. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Gofman on the appointment and noted the complex path he traveled to reach this moment. “Roman, you overcame all obstacles, and you are being appointed as Israel’s 14th Mossad director,” Netanyahu said. “You showed that you have impressive learning ability, sharp thinking, exceptional cunning skills, and no less than that—a will to win.”

Netanyahu also emphasized in his remarks the central mission facing the new Mossad chief: the relentless fight against Iranian terror. “The Mossad will continue to be at the spearhead of our struggle against Iran’s aggression,” the Prime Minister declared. “We will not allow the Iranian regime to turn back the clock. We will not let it obtain nuclear weapons, and we will not let it threaten our existence.”

Incoming Mossad director Major General Roman Gofman thanked outgoing Mossad director Dadi Barnea for leading the organization to major achievements and made clear he intends to continue the offensive and covert approach. “The strategic reversal we inflicted on the Iranian axis changed the power equation in the entire region,” Gofman said. “The Shiite axis was hit hard, but the work is not done. The Mossad’s core is covert activity in the target, and we will continue to develop methods, surprise, and influence.”

Outgoing Mossad director David Barnea wished his successor success and praised the organization’s employees for their determination in the face of unprecedented challenges. “Face forward,” Gofman concluded his remarks after officially entering the position. Gofman brings with him 31 years of operational experience in the IDF, including commanding the 7th Brigade, the 210th Division, and the National Training Center, and he will now need to navigate the Israeli intelligence ship through the turbulent waters of the Middle East.
