Intel Veteran: Israel Will Lead Solution to Drone Threat

After more than four years of war in Ukraine, Zvi Magen, former Israeli ambassador to Ukraine and Russia and a veteran of Israel’s intelligence community, is convinced the central lesson Israel must draw isn’t just tactical or strategic—it’s about the revolution that has transformed the battlefield itself.

“I call it ‘the drone war,’” Magen told C14, explaining that unmanned aerial vehicles have changed the rules of the game and become one of the decisive factors in modern warfare.

Magen first wanted to put the conflict in proper proportion: “This is a war of Europe against Russia,” he clarified, not a fight where Ukraine stands alone. European countries have backed Kyiv from the start of the fighting, arming, training, and supplying it with advanced combat systems. Ukraine’s achievements must therefore be examined against the backdrop of broad Western support.

According to him, the ability to strike a power like Russia using drones is among Ukraine’s most notable achievements. “We’re talking about a combat tool that took away the Russians’ ability to maneuver,” he noted. Instead of armored columns advancing rapidly into enemy territory, drones have forced them to slow down, hide, and stay pinned to their positions. At the same time, UAVs serve both sides for precision deep strikes against energy infrastructure, strategic targets, and defense industries.

Magen described how even after years of fighting, there’s currently no effective solution to the threat. The Ukrainians have developed various defense methods, including using nets and protective measures mounted on vehicles and combat platforms, but he stressed that “there’s nothing effective against this.”

In his view, the advantage now lies with whoever can deploy drones in large quantities. “Whoever uses them… and sometimes in masses, in all kinds of ‘swarms,’ succeeds,” he said. This, he believes, is exactly why drones have become a tool capable of shifting the balance of power even against much larger and stronger armies.

Magen argued this is also the direction future wars are heading, explaining that the main casualty is the ability to conduct large-scale ground maneuvers using armored forces—a concept armies have relied on for decades: “It’s precisely the drones that know how to stop that.”

Despite the troubling picture, Magen believes the situation won’t remain this way forever: “Right now I can’t recommend something that neutralizes drones. No one can,” but he also predicted that Israel will be a pioneer in the field—”I have a suspicion that Israelis too will develop the solution before others, and then they’ll have to switch to other or previous methods.”

After a period of strained relations between Colombia and Israel, the country’s president-elect, Abelardo de la Espriella, announced Monday a shift in his nation’s foreign policy.

De la Espriella declared that upon taking office he will reopen Colombia’s embassy in Israel and move it to Jerusalem. He will also cancel plans to open a Colombian embassy in ‘Palestine’ that were advanced by the outgoing government led by President Gustavo Petro.

De la Espriella announced during a weekly broadcast that he intends to make a series of changes to Colombia’s diplomatic apparatus, including closing several embassies around the world and consolidating some diplomatic missions, with the goal of cutting costs and reducing bureaucracy.

According to him, canceling the opening of the embassy in ‘Palestine’ is part of the shift he seeks to lead in the country’s foreign policy. He also announced he will open a new embassy in Nigeria.

The president-elect noted that closing embassies does not necessarily mean severing diplomatic relations with the countries where the missions will be shut down, except for Cuba and Nicaragua, for which he announced a change in relations.

The decisions announced by de la Espriella mark a shift from the course led by outgoing President Petro, during whose tenure relations with Israel deteriorated and who advanced the move to open a diplomatic mission in ‘Palestine.’

Eisenkot Cyprus Billboard Sparks Local Backlash

A campaign billboard for Gadi Eisenkot, leader of Israel’s Yesh party, was placed along a major highway in Cyprus and sparked widespread public debate in the country. The billboard, written in Hebrew, featured Eisenkot’s photo alongside the message: “Israelis, drive safely. You deserve it.”

The ad, apparently aimed at the thousands of Israelis staying in Cyprus, drew heavy reaction on social media and in local media. At the center of the debate was whether it’s appropriate to allow a foreign country’s election campaign on Cypriot soil—especially at a time when the number of Israelis on the island is particularly high.

At the center of the storm was independent European Parliament member Fidias Panayiotou, who posted a video attacking the billboard’s placement. “Do you understand how serious this is? It shows how many Israelis are here—so many that it was worth putting up a billboard for them,” he said. He went on to call for legislation banning political campaigns by non-EU countries on Cypriot territory.

Alongside the criticism, Panayiotou’s remarks also drew pushback from commenters and analysts who argued that focusing on the number of Israelis in the country and framing their presence as a problem fuels anti-Israeli discourse with antisemitic overtones.

The IDF said the operation was aimed at apprehending wanted terror suspects in the camp. During the raid, Israeli forces came under heavy fire from multiple directions.

Magen David Adom, Israel’s emergency medical service, evacuated the wounded soldiers to hospitals in northern Israel. Their conditions were not immediately disclosed.
The military said forces are still operating in the area and searching for the gunmen who opened fire on the troops.

Jenin and its adjacent refugee camp have been a flashpoint of violence over the past year, with the IDF conducting near-daily raids to arrest suspected militants and seize weapons. ‘Palestinian’ gunmen have frequently ambushed Israeli forces during these operations.

The soldier’s death brings the number of Israeli security personnel killed in Judea and Samaria this year to several dozen, though exact figures were not provided by the military.

Bardogo: Netanyahu’s US Visit Important—But Not Dramatic

Political analyst Yaakov Bardogo addressed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s expected visit to the United States this morning (Monday). Bardogo emphasized that while the visit is important, it is not “dramatic” or one that “totally changes the regional reality,” but rather a “working visit” that will focus primarily on the Iranian issue.

According to Bardogo, the eighth meeting between the prime minister and the US president will address questions concerning the entire region, starting with Gaza, through Lebanon and Syria. He noted that Israel will not come “to lobby for one action or another,” but rather “will present the facts, the analyses.” The dialogue will be in the spirit of “an exchange of views” and examining the path forward, half a year after they went to war “shoulder to shoulder.”

Bardogo added that Netanyahu will clarify the points Israel needs and explain the necessity for “a different, new security concept for Israel” following the events of October 7th. “You can no longer defend Israel from the border,” he said. He also noted that peace agreements will be discussed, and that “the Gulf states are looking for a way to reach Israel,” an issue that may ripen toward September and “the UN show” which will be “a bigger event” than planned.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, before departing for Washington: “I will discuss with President Trump all the issues on the table, first and foremost Iran. Our goal is to protect our security and also expand the circle of peace around us.”

I’m heading out on this mission with one clear goal—to ensure the security, strength, and future of our beloved State of Israel.

Graham-Netanyahu Calls Revealed in New Documentary Footage

Rare video footage from a new documentary “Lindsey’s Game”, about Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, offers a fascinating glimpse into closed-door conversations between Jerusalem and Washington as fateful decisions were being made.

In one of the film’s central scenes, recorded March 4 in Graham’s Senate office, the senator is preparing to fly to Florida to meet with President Donald Trump. Just before leaving, he spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and told him he planned to try convincing the president to join Israel’s campaign in Lebanon.

But Netanyahu moved to block the initiative. He made clear to Graham that Israel wanted to focus at that stage on the campaign against Iran, and that opening a broad front against Hezbollah could actually serve the other side and lead to an escalation neither party wanted.

“I thought about the other side,” Netanyahu said. “We’re focusing on Iran. If we tell Hezbollah we’re going all the way, then they’ll have no choice but to go all the way with us. Right now we’re not interested in that.”

In another clip released from the film, Graham is seen celebrating what he presents as a personal achievement in advancing the war, even comparing Trump and Netanyahu at the end to two World War II leaders: “Trump and Bibi are Roosevelt and Churchill.”
