Eradicating Israel? “Palestine” on official Egyptian map

Egyptian news site Cairo24 posted a map yesterday (Thursday) on X tied to Egypt’s new high school curriculum that labels the territory northeast of Egypt as “Palestine”—with no mention of Israel. The post read: “Present in the pages of history – Palestine appears on Egypt’s political map in the new high school curriculum.” The move is striking given that Egypt has maintained peace and diplomatic relations with Israel since 1979. The Foreign Ministry needs to act and make clear this is unacceptable.

The map Cairo24 published shows countries surrounding Egypt, including Jordan and Saudi Arabia. But where Israel sits, the label reads “Palestine”—no mention of the country with which Egypt shares a border and maintains formal diplomatic relations. The Egyptian outlet’s tweet stated in Arabic: “Present in the pages of history – Palestine appears on Egypt’s political map in the new high school curriculum.” The publication comes amid Egypt’s rollout of a new high school curriculum designed to shift teaching methods from memorization to understanding, analysis, and application. Yet within this reform, a map that doesn’t mention Israel raises questions about how the region’s political reality is being presented to students.

Egypt was the first Arab country to sign a peace agreement with Israel. The Camp David Accords were signed in September 1978, and on March 26, 1979, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed the peace treaty between the two countries, hosted by U.S. President Jimmy Carter. Since then, the countries have maintained formal diplomatic relations. Over the years they’ve also coordinated on security matters, with Egypt playing a central role mediating between Israel and actors in the Gaza Strip. Alongside political and security ties, economic relations exist as well—including natural gas supplies from Israel to Egypt. Against this backdrop, depicting the territory northeast of Egypt as “Palestine” without Israel’s name appearing on the map is particularly notable.

The peace treaty between Israel and Egypt includes recognition of each country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence, alongside establishing formal relations. That said, the map’s publication alone doesn’t legally establish a “blatant violation of the Camp David Accords.” Such a determination would require examining the map’s official status, who produced it, who approved it, and the relevant treaty provisions. The claim that this represents deliberate erasure of Israel also isn’t proven by the publication alone. What can be established is that the map as presented by Cairo24 doesn’t include Israel’s name, even though Egypt officially recognizes Israel and has maintained relations with it for decades. Cairo24’s post attributes the map to the new high school curriculum, but from available information it’s unclear whether it was produced directly by Egypt’s Education Ministry, by a private company preparing educational materials, or through another entity.

This question carries significant weight. If this is teaching material officially approved for use in schools, it could raise policy questions about the messages being conveyed to students about Israel. If it’s a map produced by a private entity that hasn’t received government approval, the implications differ. Further clarification is needed before determining whether Egypt’s government itself decided to remove Israel from educational maps. Relations between Israel and Egypt rest on a peace agreement signed nearly five decades ago. Since then the countries have maintained formal ties, operate embassies, and cooperate on security and economic matters. Egypt also serves as a central player on issues related to the Gaza Strip, partly due to its shared border with Gaza and its regional standing.

Meanwhile, Israel and Egypt maintain significant energy sector ties. Israeli natural gas flows to Egypt, where it serves the domestic market and energy industry. So the published map raises a question that goes beyond graphics: How is Israel being presented to students in a country that officially recognizes it and has maintained peace with it since 1979? At this stage it’s clear that the map Cairo24 published shows “Palestine” where one would expect to find reference to Israel as well. However, to determine whether this represents official Egyptian government policy, deliberate erasure, or a violation of the peace treaty, additional information is needed about the map’s source and its status within Egypt’s education system.

Father of Dizengoff Terrorist Killed After 5 Years Immunity

The terrorist killed overnight Thursday by Israeli forces in the Jenin area was Fathi Hazem, father of the gunman who carried out the deadly 2022 attack at a bar on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv that killed Tomer Morad, Eytam Magini, and Barak Lufan. Hazem previously served as commander of the ‘Palestinian’ Authority’s army in Shechem [Nablus] with the rank of brigadier general. After his son carried out the attack, he delivered an incitement speech and became a popular figure among West Bank Arabs.

Hazem later deserted his official position in the ‘Palestinian’ Authority and moved to open terror activity without uniform. He worked to unite all terror factions in the area and led the establishment of the “Jenin Battalion,” an organization that later replicated itself in other cities across Judea and Samaria and grew to monstrous proportions. Absurdly, for about five years Hazem enjoyed de facto immunity and was not designated as wanted. After the body of young Tiran Fero was kidnapped to Jenin, the security establishment preferred to avoid military action and reached negotiations that resulted in a deal: Fero’s body was returned, and the founder of the Jenin Battalion received immunity that allowed him to even be hospitalized without fear.

Under those understandings and the immunity he enjoyed, Hazem was transferred from the hospital in Jenin to a hospital in Ramallah by ‘Palestinian’ Authority army commander Nidal Abu Dukhan, traveling in the vehicle of Hussein al-Sheikh. Though he could have been easily arrested then, the system refrained from capturing him. Last night the arch-terrorist tried to stab soldiers operating in his village in northern Samaria. The soldiers who encountered the immediate danger returned accurate fire, killed the terrorist, and thus brought an end to the immunity affair and his ongoing terror activity.

IDF Eliminates Oct 7 Terrorist Who Held Hostages

The IDF announced on Friday that in an airstrike two days ago in the Nuseirat area of central Gaza, forces eliminated the terrorist Sabahi Sami Mahmoud Shahata, a platoon commander in Hamas’s military wing. According to military statements, Shahata actively breached Israeli territory during the October 7 massacre, was directly involved in holding numerous hostages captive throughout the war, and even participated in the staged release ceremonies handing hostages over to the Red Cross in November 2023.

Our forces eliminated terrorist Sabahi Sami Mahmoud Shahata, identified by the military as a platoon commander within the Hamas terror organization’s military wing. The targeted strike was carried out Wednesday in the Nuseirat sector of the Gaza Strip. According to the IDF, Shahata was directly tied to the October 7 onslaught: “The terrorist Sabahi invaded the sovereign territory of the State of Israel during the October 7 massacre and took part in holding numerous hostages in Hamas captivity throughout the war,” the IDF stated. The IDF further noted that Shahata participated in the propaganda ceremonies during the hostage release deal in November 2023. “Additionally, as part of Operation ‘Heaven’s Doors’ in November 2023, terrorist Sabahi Sami Mahmoud Shahata took part in the ‘ceremony’ releasing the returnees and transferring them to the Red Cross,” the military statement confirmed.

According to the military, Shahata’s terror activity did not end with guarding hostages. In recent weeks, he actively attempted to advance imminent attacks against IDF personnel and Israeli civilians. “Recently, the terrorist attempted to advance terror plots against IDF troops and Israeli civilians, and was eliminated to remove the threat,” the IDF noted. The military emphasized that Southern Command forces remain deployed on the ground in accordance with operational directives, maintaining an active posture to neutralize emerging threats: “IDF Southern Command forces are deployed across the sector in accordance with the agreement and will continue operating to remove any immediate threat.”

During an operational raid by fighters from the Paratroopers Brigade’s 890th Battalion in Jenin, the armed assailant charged troops with a knife and was immediately eliminated by precise fire. No casualties were sustained by our forces. The eliminated assailant was identified as Fathi Hazem from Jenin. Forces targeted him following extensive incitement against the State of Israel and the IDF in public speeches and across social media. Our reporter Eliya Aviv reported new  details on the eliminated Arab terrorist Hazem:

    • Family of Terrorists: Fathi Hazem is the father of Ra’ad Hazem, the terrorist who perpetrated the mass shooting attack on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv on April 7, 2022, murdering three civilians and wounding six others. He is also the father of Abed Hazem, who carried out a shooting attack at the Jalame crossing. Hazem previously served as a senior officer within the ‘Palestinian’ Authority security apparatus.

    • Smuggling & Incitement: He was heavily involved in smuggling weapons for the Jenin terror networks dismantled during Operation Iron Wall and persistently incited violence to reconstitute those terror cells.

The incident highlights the recurring threat: the critical question of “what happens when ‘Palestinian’ Authority security officers turn their weapons against us?” It has happened before, it happened in Jenin, and remaining silent on this reality compromises Israel’s national security.

Fallen Sultan Yacoub Hero Brought to Rest After 44 Years

The funeral procession for Staff Sergeant Yehuda Yekutiel Katz, who fell in the Sultan Yacoub battle in 1982 and whose remains were returned from Lebanon this week, set out Friday from Kerem B’Yavneh yeshiva where he studied, heading to the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. The return of Katz’s remains was made possible by a special covert operation led by Military Intelligence in a joint community effort with the Mossad. After the findings arrived in Israel, a precise identification process was conducted at the IDF Rabbinate’s Fallen Soldiers Identification Center, in cooperation with the Medical Corps and Israel Police, after which the official notification was delivered to his family.

Yehuda Katz was born in Ramat Gan to his parents Yosef and Sarah Katz, Holocaust survivors who did not live to receive the moving news, having passed away over the years. In his childhood he showed outstanding talents in his studies, particularly in religious studies, and studied at Nehalim Yeshiva and later at Kerem B’Yavneh Yeshiva under Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Goldvicht. Yehuda served as a fighter in the Armored Corps, and when the Lebanon War broke out he joined his comrades and fought in a tank alongside his commander, Lieutenant Zohar Lifshitz. He was sent to the brutal battle at Sultan Yacoub, which took place on June 11, 1982, just ten days before his scheduled discharge from the IDF.

In that battle, tank commander Zohar Lifshitz was killed—his body was returned in a 1984 exchange—while Yehuda Katz, Zechariah Baumel, and Zvi Feldman were considered missing from the battle for decades. According to Military Intelligence data, those who held the missing soldiers and information about their fate were Palestinian elements in Syria under the direction of the PLO and its leader Yasser Arafat, who led efforts of concealment and deception. Now, after 44 years of relentless attempts by the security establishment and family members, the painful circle has closed and the last fallen soldier from the Sultan Yacoub battle is being laid to rest in Jerusalem.

New Likud Candidate Tied to Alleged Plot to Oust Netanyahu

According to dramatic testimony from a Likud MK obtained by C14, businessman Tzviel Rubin, who was elected this week to the 42nd spot in the Likud primaries, was allegedly involved in an effort to oust Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the period following October 7. According to the testimony, Rubin acted alongside Minister Nir Barkat and was at the time exploring the possibility of becoming his chief of staff.

    From Tzviel Rubin’s Facebook page

The Likud MK testified that sometime after October 7, Rubin circulated through the Knesset seeking support for an effort he described as “moving the prime minister.” According to the testimony, Rubin claimed he was approaching lawmakers on behalf of himself and Barkat, arguing that following October 7 there was no alternative but to remove Netanyahu from his position. He allegedly presented a structured plan that included the possibility of establishing a breakaway “Likud B” party if the effort failed.

The MK described the alleged conversation to C14 in his own words: “He sat in my office and said he was approaching me on his own behalf and on behalf of Nir Barkat, and that they believed that after October 7 there was no longer any choice but to move the prime minister from his position. They were approaching people they viewed as ideological partners in this effort and wanted to know whether they would be willing to go with them on this or not. “It appeared to be a very well-organized plan. They also discussed that if the attempt failed, there would be no choice—those were his words—and they would have to establish ‘Likud B.’ Those were the exact words.”

The information could now have implications for the internal balance of power within the Likud faction. Alongside Rubin, his sister-in-law Keren Attias Bublil was elected to the 34th spot. Both are considered close to David Bitan, as the primary results potentially create an internal opposition bloc that could include Bitan, Barkat and Tally Gotliv.

Although Rubin and Bublil now publicly declare unequivocal support for Netanyahu, their disappointment over the prime minister actively campaigning against them in the primaries could potentially turn them into “free votes” within the new faction—and a future political headache for Netanyahu.

Rubin strongly denied the allegations. “I never worked for Minister Nir Barkat,” he said. “I find it very strange that immediately after my primary victory, apparently those disappointed by the results choose to invent stories. I supported and will continue to support Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is leading the State of Israel to tremendous achievements.”

Minister Nir Barkat’s office responded: “Tzvi’el Rubin never worked for Minister Barkat or acted on his behalf. Any other claim is a lie. The primaries are over and there’s no need to continue recycling lies that only harm Likud unity and the right’s chance of victory in the elections.”

Europe Condemns Israel’s Judea & Samaria Construction Plans

Leaders of France, Germany, Britain, and Italy condemned Israel’s decision Thursday to issue construction tenders for the E1 residential project in Judea and Samaria. In a joint statement, the four countries called the move “unacceptable.”

The joint statement read: “The Israeli government’s decision to publish bids for construction tenders as part of the E1 settlement project is unacceptable.” Meanwhile, Britain announced it will prepare targeted sanctions against those involved in expanding the Jewish community in Judea and Samaria, alongside additional measures in response to the E1 project.

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the British government summoned the official in charge of relations at Israel’s embassy in the country over the tender and demanded Israel halt the move and cancel the tender. He also announced that additional measures against Israel will be announced in the coming weeks.

Australia Scolds Israeli Envoy for Defending His Country

Australia’s foreign minister said Thursday that relations between her country and Israel are going through “difficult times.” The minister added that she asked Australia’s ambassador to Israel “to convey our position directly to her,” and said the Australian government “is considering its next steps.”

The Australian decision came after Israel’s ambassador to the country, Hillel Neuman, defended the IDF’s investigation into the death of an Australian aid worker killed in a strike in Gaza nearly two years ago. While Australia demanded that IDF soldiers be prosecuted, the ambassador stood firm that the incident involved no criminal liability—as the investigation concluded.

“I demanded that the IDF investigate the death of Australian Zomi Frankcom—and that’s what happened. Israel published its findings after a thorough investigation, after a two-year investigation, and it must be understood that not every case in which a person dies, in which there are casualties, means there is criminal liability,” Neuman said, adding a sharp rebuke: “You can’t attack court findings just because they don’t fit someone’s political agenda.”

The foreign minister rejected Neuman’s remarks, said “Australia is disturbed” by the Israeli decision, and summoned the ambassador for a meeting. This, despite the ambassador adding in his comments that an Australian investigation from 2024, led by the local air force commander, reached a similar conclusion.
