TSA screeners uncovered a series of disturbing finds during routine security checks, including a knuckle brass with claws similar to Marvel comics superhero Wolverine, a military smoke grenade hidden in a spray can, and a double-edged knife concealed inside a baseball bat flashlight.

Routine security screenings at U.S. airports have recently turned up a series of bizarre and disturbing discoveries, as alert screeners detected an array of weapons and prohibited items hidden in creative ways. Among the notable finds recently published by the Transportation Security Administration: a sharp, strange object that looked like claws belonging to the fictional Marvel character Wolverine, a military smoke grenade neutralized inside a carry-on bag, and a lethal knife concealed inside a flashlight.

One of the most unusual and surprising cases occurred at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, where security officers Douglas Lin and Dennis Oishi spotted a suspicious and menacing object making its way through the X-ray screening. Initially, they suspected it might be a replica weapon or an innocent prop from a movie set, but the reality turned out to be far more unusual.

The agency’s supervisory officer, Ann Rhoades, described in shock the moment the item was revealed, noting that in her seven years with the agency this was one of the most extraordinary items she’d encountered. Her first thought was “Oh my God” and her second was “Is this what I think it is?”

According to Rhoades, when Dennis asked the passenger if there were any sharp items in the bag, the passenger replied that he wasn’t sure—an answer that received immediate confirmation when the item was voluntarily removed from the bag. Seattle’s Federal Security Director Robert Spinden praised his team’s performance, noting that officers Lin and Oishi “demonstrated the vigilance, teamwork, and professionalism that characterize our mission every day,” and that their actions “prevented a prohibited item from passing through the checkpoint and underscored the importance of meticulous screening, clear coordination, and quiet execution.”

The Seattle claw incident joins a long list of strange and troubling discoveries that TSA security inspectors have detected across the United States recently. During a routine check at Watertown Airport in upstate New York, officers discovered a used military smoke grenade that had been cleverly hidden inside an aerosol spray can placed in a passenger’s carry-on bag, according to an agency announcement.

Meanwhile, at Tampa Airport, security officer Andrew Carter was screening a carry-on bag through the X-ray machine and noticed an unusual and irregular structure in a flashlight, prompting him to flag the bag for more thorough inspection. Supervisory inspector Michael Slaughter conducted a manual search and felt a strange mass in the flashlight’s lining. After opening the seams, it turned out to be a flashlight designed like a small baseball bat—with a simple twist, the handle detached and revealed a four-inch double-edged knife blade integrated into the handle. These cases underscore the relentless efforts and creativity of passengers attempting to smuggle prohibited items, against the steadfast vigilance of security personnel preventing disasters at airports.
