A 67-year-old wheelchair-bound shop owner was attacked multiple times last week by a group of youths in Berlin after he displayed posters in his storefront commemorating the October 7 massacre. The youths pepper-sprayed him, beat him, and vandalized his shop door.

The incidents took place in Berlin’s Kreuzberg neighborhood. The shop owner, Hans-Georg “HG” Lindenau, put up posters against antisemitism in early October following Hamas’s terror attack on October 7, 2023. On October 7 of this year, about six youths came to his shop and allegedly cursed at him and pepper-sprayed him.
The next day, up to six youths returned to the shop and pepper-sprayed him again. When he began calling for help, the suspects fled, but shortly after—as he was closing the shop—they returned and attacked him once more with pepper spray and punches. Following the assault, Lindenau suffered facial pain and was later documented with a bleeding wound on the back of his head.

Later, eyewitnesses told local police they saw a group of up to eight youths arrive at the shop on electric scooters. The suspects kicked and punched the entrance door, damaged it, and fled.
Despite the repeated attacks and fear of further violence, Lindenau continues to operate his shop. In an interview with the German newspaper Tagesspiegel, he said he fears further attacks but receives support from neighborhood residents, who come to the shop after business hours to show solidarity and help protect him.

In one instance, an elderly woman came to the shop to express solidarity and purchased anti-antisemitism stickers. Lindenau expressed gratitude for the public support and said the media coverage is also helping to protect him.
The investigation has been transferred to the State Security unit of the Berlin police, operating within the local criminal investigations office. Investigators are examining suspicions of dangerous assault, insult, and property damage, alongside suspicions of an antisemitic motive.
