Saudi Arabia confirmed three of its citizens were killed in Houthi attacks on Riyadh's international airports this week, marking the first Saudi civilian deaths since the kingdom officially joined the campaign against the Yemeni militant group.

Saudi Arabia confirmed Friday that three Saudi citizens were killed and several citizens and residents of various nationalities were injured in two Houthi attacks on international airports in Riyadh this week. According to the report, the first attack targeted airport facilities, while the second targeted a plane belonging to Saudi carrier

The airline confirmed in a statement the death of one of its employees and damage to one of its aircraft at Riyadh airport, noting that the plane was damaged while on the ground with no passengers aboard. This isn’t the first time the Yemeni terror group has struck the capital’s airport, but it’s the first time Saudi citizens have been killed.

The development comes after Saudi Arabia officially declared it had entered the war against the terror organization. The Saudis joined Yemeni army forces and provided air cover with 100 fighter jets as they launched an offensive against the Houthis. Following the operation, Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s government announced they had recaptured parts of the Bab al-Mandab strait coast that had been seized—though they provided no evidence to support the claim.
