Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality is refusing to allow a major Selichot prayer event at Tel Baruch beach with gender-separated seating, in accordance with Jewish law and tradition. In response, the Union of Community Rabbis and Linor Atar are now filing a petition with the Tel Aviv District Court against the municipality, according to a report published today (Thursday) by Yinon Magal.
The event is planned for this Saturday night, September 19, the 8th of Tishrei, at Tel Baruch beach, with participation from Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, city rabbi Rabbi Zevadia Cohen, neighborhood rabbis, and a large crowd.
In the petition, organizers are asking the court to intervene in the municipality’s decision and allow the Selichot gathering to proceed in a format that enables separation between men and women, as is customary at religious events of this type.
Tel Aviv municipality did not provide a comment.
