Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and his German counterpart met in Berlin Sunday, culminating in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two governments establishing a strategic dialogue at the foreign minister level. The broadly worded agreement is intended to strengthen consultation and coordination between Saudi Arabia and Germany while developing bilateral relations across a range of fields.

The memorandum may also carry security implications, as the two ministers discussed efforts to find peaceful and diplomatic solutions to regional and international crises. They also reviewed the historic bilateral relationship between Saudi Arabia and Germany and ways to further develop cooperation.
The two sides emphasized the importance of securing international shipping routes, guaranteeing freedom of navigation and restoring normal operations through the Strait of Hormuz, with the aim of strengthening regional security and stability while maintaining the flow of international trade.
The agreement is the second Saudi Arabia has signed with a European country in recent weeks. Previously, French President Emmanuel Macron and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman signed a major agreement between Paris and Riyadh involving three amusement parks. According to the French president’s office, one of the parks will be themed around Dragon Ball Z, the Japanese manga and anime franchise reportedly enjoyed by both leaders.
