A senior Iranian official said Wednesday, as the 60-day ceasefire set in the memorandum of understanding nears its end, that no discussions are taking place with the United States on extending it. The official, speaking to Reuters, presented a hardline position from the Tehran regime and blamed the impasse on the administration in Washington, claiming the US violated previous agreements.
According to the Iranian official, Tehran doesn’t recognize any official start date for the current ceasefire—and therefore sees no point or need for discussions on extending it. He accused the United States of violating the agreement and withdrawing from it unilaterally, which he said prevents any real progress through diplomatic channels between the countries at this time.
The official said one of the only issues on the table is the question of the United States returning to the memorandum of understanding and defining clear timelines for implementing the various commitments. Still, he stressed that no progress has been made on this front, and accused the American administration of dragging its feet and showing no willingness to reach practical understandings with the regime.
