A serious security case came to a close in military court with the sentencing of an IDF soldier convicted of contact with a foreign agent and passing information that could benefit the enemy. The case began in 2025, when the defendant started receiving enticing messages on his Telegram account from sources identified with Iran, offering him “jobs” in exchange for money.
As part of the relationship that developed, an Iranian agent offered the soldier money for filming assignments. The soldier agreed and sent the agent two videos he filmed himself during Operation “Rising Lion,” showing missile intercepts over civilian areas, and even received payment for one of them. Later, the soldier sent the agent additional materials, including footage of missile strikes he found online.
The Verdict: Between Severity and Taking Responsibility
A joint investigation by the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division, the IDF’s Intelligence Directorate, and the Shin Bet led to the filing of an indictment. The military prosecution sought a seven-year prison sentence, emphasizing the real security risk and the need to deter other soldiers. On the other hand, the court gave significant weight to the fact that the soldier did not leak classified information he accessed through his military role.
The sentencing noted that the defendant acted on his own initiative and ended contact with the agent when he began to feel pressure, and even reported it to his commanders—a step that led to his immediate arrest by the Shin Bet. Ultimately, he was sentenced to five years in prison, suspended sentence, a fine of ₪1,000, and demotion to the rank of private.
