massive overnight Ukrainian drone swarm targeted an industrial facility in Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod. Video emerged of large fires at Lukoil's oil refinery—one of Russia's five largest—as Moscow claims it intercepted 235 drones nationwide.

Russian authorities officially confirmed on Sunday that an industrial plant in the city of Kstovo, located in the Nizhny Novgorod region roughly 800 kilometers from the Ukrainian frontier, sustained significant structural damage following a sweeping overnight Ukrainian drone barrage. The regional governor, Gleb Nikitin, attributed the strike directly to Ukrainian armed forces, stating that air defense batteries and electronic warfare systems engaged more than 100 unmanned aerial vehicles over the province alone. Nikitin stated that initial operational reports indicated no direct human casualties.

However, the governor admitted that damage assessment teams are actively evaluating widespread harm to civilian and industrial infrastructure, warning that authorities will need to assist residents whose property was affected. Nikitin warned that repair efforts could trigger temporary rolling electricity blackouts, along with interruptions to municipal hot water supplies and central heating systems in residential quarters.

At the national level, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that air defense forces shot down 235 Ukrainian drones across Russian territory throughout the night. Eyewitness accounts and video dispatches from Kstovo residents revealed loud explosions rocking the municipality during the pre-dawn hours. Ukrainian tracking channels and open-source intelligence monitors published authentic visual documentation showing thick smoke columns and a large fire consuming sections of the Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez oil refinery, operated by Russian energy giant Lukoil.

While Russian defense sources avoided naming the exact facility, the Kstovo refinery represents one of the five largest petroleum processing complexes in the Russian Federation, boasting an operational capacity of roughly 17 million metric tons of crude oil per year. The refinery has become a high-priority strategic target for Ukrainian long-range strike wings over the past year.

On August 26, the facility was forced to halt operations after an earlier Ukrainian drone salvo triggered a major blaze across its processing units. Sunday’s attack fits into a broader, systematically coordinated Ukrainian campaign aimed at degrading Russia’s fossil fuel export infrastructure and domestic refining capacities, which has targeted strategic oil facilities, pipeline pumping hubs, and Baltic Sea export terminals to constrain military fuel logistics and reduce state energy revenues
