Thousands of Israeli reservists received an alarming text message warning of an imminent operation—but it wasn't a call-up. The IDF is launching a 12-day amnesty program to recover weapons and military equipment, no questions asked.

Thousands of Israeli reservists across the country found themselves staring at a message that could trigger a racing heartbeat in the past day, after a terse and dramatic text landed on their smartphones opening with the jarring words: “Operation starts in 4 days!” At a tense time when Israeli forces are fighting on multiple fronts and any slight tremor raises fears of an emergency call-up or the start of a major military operation, it was a pretty strange choice by the military, given the message’s actual purpose.

A quick check with security officials reveals a reassuring picture: this isn’t a cyberattack and certainly not a combat deployment order, but rather an official and completely authentic message from the IDF’s Technology and Logistics Directorate. The military is preparing to launch a nationwide operation to recover combat equipment, ammunition, and military gear that remained in the possession of civilians, active-duty soldiers, and reservists from the events of the past year and from previous service.

Under the operation, which will run for 12 days (between November 1 and 12), the IDF is allowing anyone to return military equipment or weapons held illegally, with an explicit promise of legal immunity: returns will be possible without requiring identification and without opening criminal or disciplinary proceedings for removing or possessing the item. To facilitate this, 63 dedicated collection stations will operate across the country, alongside a dedicated phone hotline at *6008 and expanded details on the official reservist website.
