The U.S. is warning its citizens in the Middle East of possible escalation, flight disruptions, and airspace closures as Iran and its proxies may target American interests in the region and globally.

The United States issued a security warning Thursday evening urging American citizens across the Middle East to exercise heightened caution amid escalating regional tensions and the possibility of sudden security developments.
The State Department described the regional security situation as “complex,” warning that unexpected escalation could trigger flight cancellations, temporary airspace closures and widespread disruptions to passenger travel.

The warning extends well beyond the Middle East. According to the State Department, Iran and Iranian-backed organizations could also target American interests outside the region, including businesses, institutions and locations associated with the United States and its citizens. Americans currently in the Middle East were urged to closely monitor airline and airport announcements, embassy security alerts and ongoing regional developments. The department emphasized that travelers should be prepared for sudden changes to their flight arrangements.

The American security concerns are not limited to Iran itself. The Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist organization in Yemen remains a significant threat to regional aviation and international trade routes. The Houthis have previously threatened Saudi infrastructure and, in recent months, expanded their attacks against cities, airports and energy facilities.

The warning comes amid a particularly dangerous escalation involving Saudi Arabia, where recent Houthi strikes on airports have caused fatalities and major disruptions to air traffic. These developments have raised concerns that the regional confrontation could expand further, with civilian infrastructure and aviation potentially facing continued attacks in the coming days.
