Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced his resignation today (Sunday), ending his second and final term as head of state early. The resignation clears the way for snap presidential elections, but doesn’t mark his exit from political life, according to Reuters.
1+Vučić isn’t leaving politics. Earlier this month, he announced plans to run for prime minister in snap parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25.
Vučić, who has dominated Serbian politics for over a decade and previously served as prime minister, cannot run for a third presidential term. According to Reuters, his ruling party has already positioned him as its candidate for prime minister.
1+The move comes amid prolonged protests against the government, which intensified after a canopy collapsed at the Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, killing 16 people. Protesters turned the incident into a symbol of alleged corruption and governance failures, while Vučić and his allies reject the accusations.
Earlier this month, Vučić dissolved parliament and called early elections, which had been scheduled for 2027. Now, alongside the parliamentary campaign, Serbia will also need to prepare for snap presidential elections following his resignation.
