Israel’s Central Elections Committee voted Wednesday to disqualify Ofer Cassif, a lawmaker from the Jewish-Arab Hadash-Ta’al party, from running in the country’s April 2 election. The committee cited Cassif’s support for South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague as grounds for the ban.
Cassif can appeal the decision to the Supreme Court, which will make the final ruling on his eligibility. The disqualification comes as Israel heads to snap elections following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to dissolve the Knesset earlier this month.
