A terrifying antisemitic attack unfolded about a week ago in Maine when a 36-year-old armed man opened fire on Camp Modim, a Jewish summer camp where children as young as seven were staying, according to the New York Post.

According to court documents, the suspect, Nathan Hewitt, fired about 20 rounds from a semi-automatic rifle at the camp’s basketball courts—triggering panic and harrowing moments of terror. Hewitt apparently acted under the influence of alcohol and antisemitic motives. Shortly before the shooting, he had confronted camp security guards, claiming his lawn mower tractor was damaged by the camp.
Immediately after the confrontation, gunshots rang out, forcing all children at the camp into lockdown and supervision for hours. A search of the suspect’s home led police to seize no fewer than 23 different firearms. Outrageously, despite the severity of the incident, Hewitt was released on bail under restrictions including a no-contact order with the camp. Yet camp management and security guards report that since his release, he and his father continue to harass staff.

According to testimony, the two show up at the location and scream at those staying at the camp. A guard at the site described Hewitt as someone who harasses them especially when drunk. Following the continued harassment, a request for a protective order was filed, with a hearing scheduled for the end of the month. Hewitt faces a series of serious charges including criminal conduct with a firearm and threatening with a dangerous weapon.
