Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will unveil the US economic isolation plan against Iran today (Monday) at 2:00 PM ET, under which Washington is expected to significantly expand sanctions on countries and entities maintaining trade relations with Tehran.
A source familiar with Bessent’s plans told Reuters that the Treasury Department is expected to expand the scope of secondary sanctions. Under the move, punitive measures will be imposed on all activity in certain sectors of the Iranian economy, though which sectors are involved has not yet been disclosed. The plan means that even foreign countries, companies, and entities that are not American could face punishment if they continue operating in the designated sectors. Washington is thereby forcing Iran’s trading partners to choose between maintaining ties with Tehran or facing exposure to US sanctions.
