As Iran prepares for the funeral of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, scheduled for July 9 in the city of Mashhad, authorities are weighing an unusual approach. Gholam Hossein Mozaffari, governor of Razavi Khorasan province, announced Monday that the provincial security council has proposed conducting the funeral procession by air, according to Iran International. The governor said the initiative will likely be implemented.

Security and Crowd Control Concerns
The decision to examine an aerial ceremony stems from the need to manage the massive crowds expected to pay their “final respects.” Authorities estimate that switching to an aerial procession would provide safer conditions and prevent overcrowding at ground gathering points—a central component of security preparations for the event.
Preparations for July
Mashhad, located in northeastern Iran, is expected to be the focal point when Khamenei is buried on July 9. Reports indicate that discussions about the funeral arrangements are ongoing.

Meanwhile, speculation is growing that Iran’s new leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, may make his first public appearance since assuming power. Various sources estimate that the funeral events—expected to draw massive crowds and senior Iranian officials—will provide the most appropriate stage for the younger Khamenei’s debut.
Since the war began, and especially since being appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei has not been seen in public. According to various reports, he is staying in a hideout whose location is kept secret, due to fears of assassination attempts. Khamenei was reportedly present in the compound where his father was staying during the strike that killed him, and was himself injured in the attack. However, no official information has been released about the nature of his injuries or his medical condition.

His prolonged absence from public view has fueled widespread speculation inside and outside Iran. While messages attributed to him continue to be published through official channels and social media, there is no proof that he is actually behind them or that he is directly managing the regime’s operations.
