Trump's Iran Deal: $25 Billion for Talks

Trump promises a deal "in the coming days," but the emerging details raise serious questions. Iran stands to gain major sanctions relief and billions in frozen funds—while Israel is far from enthusiastic.

So I scanned some news sites around the world to try to understand what this deal is that President Donald Trump is talking about “in the coming days,” as he put it. If I understand correctly, it’s the same interim agreement he pushed for a month ago—a 60-day ceasefire during which negotiations on the nuclear program would take place.

The Iranians get the option to extend the 60-day period by another 60 days. In return, they get quiet, the Strait of Hormuz opens under American supervision (which, in my view, is a polite name for nonsense), Iran receives $25 billion in frozen funds, and commits to just one thing—to talk about the nuclear issue.

There’s no mention of ballistic missiles, no mention of funding proxy organizations. Some sites link Lebanon to the deal, but not at the level of a full withdrawal. In other words, the IDF continues to operate in southern Lebanon against the murderous terror organization Hezbollah in accordance with the agreement announced by the U.S. State Department about two weeks ago.

In short, it looks like another chapter in the soap opera. The Iranians are stringing President Trump along. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at this stage, isn’t coming out against his friend Trump, but in Israel they really don’t like this—and that’s putting it mildly.
