New York police data shows a 70% spike in antisemitic incidents in May compared to last year, with Jewish community leaders criticizing Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s conduct and rhetoric, which they say is contributing to rising tensions.

New York police data reveals that antisemitic crimes in the city rose more than 70% in the past month compared to last year. According to the figures, the surge in attacks against Jews intensified particularly following the war between Israel and Hamas terror organization.

According to police data, during May there was a spike in antisemitic incidents in the city, with 41 incidents compared to 24 in May 2025—a figure reflecting a 70.8% jump in attacks against Jews.

This pattern continues data from April, which also saw a surge in incidents against the Jewish community, as reflected in footage showing Elias Rosner being stabbed in Brooklyn.

Community Outrage: “The Mayor Uses Libelous Statements”

The troubling data doesn’t surprise Jewish community leaders, who are directing criticism at the Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani. Moshe Shafran, president of the United Jewish Teachers organization, said: “There is no surprise in the Jewish community that antisemitic hate crimes rose by 70%.”

Shafran blamed Mamdani’s conduct: “The mayor continues to use libelous statements against the Jewish people and the state in his speeches and on government social media, hosting antisemitic inciters like Mahmoud Khalil, defending his wife’s antisemitic social media history, and maintaining an office to combat antisemitism that exists simply only on paper—what do you expect?”

Shafran added that Mamdani’s recent decision to boycott the Israel Day Parade last month was perceived by community leaders as another insult, and concluded: “He is contributing to this problem, and he knows he is contributing.”

Just last night it was reported that in a shocking antisemitic attack that occurred on a crowded New York subway, a woman attacked a Jewish passenger and screamed hateful calls. The incident, captured on video, exposed the verbal and physical violence directed at the victim, a 23-year-old woman from the Upper West Side.

In the footage, the attacker can be seen starting to scream on the train, calling out “Jews eat children.” The verbal attack quickly escalated to physical violence, during which a clump of hair was torn from the Jewish woman’s head.

“Wake Up Before It’s Too Late”

Israel’s Consul General in New York, Ofir Akunis, issued a severe warning to the city’s residents several days ago, calling on them to “wake up before it’s too late.” Akunis made these remarks at the annual Jerusalem Post conference in New York, emphasizing that the city is in danger of “conquest by radical Islam.”

“Antisemitism in New York City is at its peak,” Akunis noted, saying this is no longer a theoretical threat but daily reality. The consul detailed that waving Hezbollah flags, using the green headbands of the Nukhba forces, physical attacks on Jews in the street, and use of Nazi symbols have become routine in the city’s streets.
